Marsh Lake Local Area Planning

The Marsh Lake Local Area Plan will be developed with your input starting
June 11, 2011 and ending in Winter 2012/13.

What is the Marsh Lake Local Area Plan?

A Local Area Plan is a document that guides government land-use decisions.

Each year, decisions are made for the Marsh Lake area that affect the present and future quality of life for residents and visitors to the area. A Local Area Plan is a tool that guides day-to-day decisions. It will include maps that designate different areas for different land uses. The Marsh Lake Community Plan will reflect the vision that Marsh Lake residents and visitors have for the future of the Marsh Lake area.

This Local Area Plan is something that the Marsh Lake Local Advisory Council has been working towards for the last ten years.

Once the plan is approved, new or revised Area Development (Zoning) Regulations will be established under the Area Development Act to effectively implement the plan's policies on Settlement and Non Settlement Land. In the event that a Lands and Resources Act is developed by the KDFN, they will have the ability to establish their own zoning on Settlement Land. These zoning regulations will be jointly developed between Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Government of Yukon, Land Planning Branch (see Section 11.7.0 of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation Final Agreement).

A Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Government of Yukon Partnership

The Kwanlin Dün First Nation Self Government Agreement provides the Government of Yukon and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) with the ability to undertake joint planning on Settlement and Non-Settlement Land within the Marsh Lake area. Planning these areas together minimizes actual and potential land use conflicts.    Kwanlin Dün First Nation has 1/3 of its Settlement Land in the Marsh Lake area, which points to the traditional and current importance of this area to the people of Kwanlin Dün.

Who is leading this?

Steering Commitee
The Marsh Lake Local Area Planning Steering Committee was established by Government of Yukon and Kwanlin Dün to guide the planning process and develop a draft plan through a public process. The Steering Committee includes three Kwanlin Dün First Nation representatives and three Marsh Lake residents appointed by Government of Yukon.
